As with many traditional Blacktop Houses on Tiree, this property has charming and distinctive features, yet suffers with issues of cold and damp and struggles to provide the space and facilities our clients look for in a modern family holiday home.

We were delighted to assist with the renovation design for this beautiful property in Mannal which looks out onto the East coast of the island.

A crucial development in this proposal was to increase floor to ceiling height in the upstairs of the property without compromising the attractive traditional proportions of the building.  We undertook a study of traditional roofs in the surrounding area and used this to arrive at a solution where the roof would be raised and steepened to gain capacity without distorting the overall shape.

The renovation will see the installation of new insulation to improve the thermal performance of the building.  The new layout includes two double bedrooms and a sleeping deck in the attic. The small adjacent byre will also become a key feature in the new design when it is converted to a double height kitchen/dining space with exposed timber structure and more generous sea views; a perfect spot to enjoy breakfast whilst watching the sunrise over the sea and the Isle of Mull on the horizon.
