This £3M facility run by the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) is the first of its kind in the UK and its located right here in Scotland. We were excited to attend the launch event and find out more about the facilities and hear about the aspirations of all of those involved.
A fantastic array of speakers presented their visions for the future of the construction industry in the UK covering topics such as the use of Virtual/Augmented Reality in Construction, off-site manufacturing, entrepreneurship, cognitive buildings that know when they need maintenance works, BIM, education for the next generation... and much, much more! We were encouraged to ask ourselves 'what if' and think broadly about what innovation can mean to us and our future projects.
It was great to catch up with numerous friends in industry, not least former Roots team member Matt Paton in his new role as Digital Automation and Prototyping Coordinator at the Innovation Factory. Matt was good enough to introduce us to some of the impressive machines you can see here which include a 13m long vacuum bed for making some of Scotland's first CLT, and off-site manufacturing cell, a multi-material 3D printer, and masonry casting press- to name but a few! As well as some very impressive VR headsets and helpful robots!
It is hugely exciting to imagine what game-changing projects might come from this place and we hope that Roots will be able to engage with the facilities in the future!
