I have always had a passion for rural architecture, where the beauty of the physical forms and the honest palette of materials come from the practical requirements of the landscape
— Donald

Donald Hunter | Senior Architectural Designer

Donald is a very intuitive architectural designer whose early experiences of building and practical problem solving, whilst living and working on a farm in Ayrshire, have contributed to his well-grounded attitude towards design and talent for finding solutions to tricky details.

After joining the Roots team in spring 2016, Donald has proved to be an indispensable member of the team, especially with regard to his development and management of drawings for the renovation of the living quarters of Iona Abbey.  This task demands an in depth understanding of the Scottish Building Regulations and meticulous organisational skills to ensure this complex project runs smoothly.

Donald graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma with distinction in Architecture from the University of Strathclyde in 2016, by which time he had already joined Roots.  Donald first came to our attention when he took on a construction internship with Roots & CKR Island Construction on Tiree in 2015.  His efficiency in the office and adaptability to work on site quickly made him indispensible to both companies.

Donald has also worked for Casa Design Architecture in Ayrshire, and studied at Sint-Lucas University in Ghent, Belgium.

Donald is remarkably good at integrating into teams of other hard working people.  In a relatively short period has made an invaluable contribution to the output of the Roots office, both in terms of design, drawings and the physical construction of our latest Tog Studio live-build project- The Tog House
