Location: Balephuil, Isle of Tiree
Clients: Susan & Neil MacDonald
Type: Renovation & Extension of Traditional White House
Completed: August 2014
Our challenge on this project was to reimagine the interior spaces of this traditional Tiree white house to provide as much open-plan space, daylight and views as possible.
The property is located close to Balephuil Beach and benefits from spectacular North Westerly views over the bay to the Atlantic Ocean.
This island home had been used by our Clients for more than 2 decades, over which time their family had grown considerably, and it became important to them that their house did the same to be used continually by the family.
We presented the client with a series of options for extending and simplifying the layout of the ground floor. The final design opted for the replacement of 2 small lean-to extensions with much larger purpose built extensions; one a sunroom that expanded the capacity of the living and dining rooms; the other an extension that would house a utility facilities to help omit necessities like white goods and storage cupboards from the kitchen and free-up space within the existing house.
Both extensions were designed with generous openings for windows and patio doors that would provide access to the garden, and views that could be appreciated from well within the existing house.
The sunroom, living room and dining room areas became one large free-flowing space to maximise functionality as a contemporary family home.
The new utility extension included a shower room for changing after a trip to the beach. A loft ladder then leads to a new attic snug which provides convenient overspill accommodation for guests.
This design has improved the quality of the internal spaces in the house without detracting from the external appearance of the traditional house.
